Century Savings Bank was founded as a community bank over 145 years ago in Bridgeton, NJ. Today, it operates a network of six branches throughout southern New Jersey with locations in Bridgeton, Elmer, Mullica Hill, Gibbstown and Vineland and has approximately $290 million in assets. The bank was originally formed on June 9, 1865, as the Bridgeton Building and Loan Association when a group of Bridgeton businessmen recognized the need for a bank to help manage the economic growth of the region. The bank opened with $2,096.50 in total assets. In 1953, the Bridgeton Building and Loan Association became federally insured and was federally chartered in 1954 as Bridgeton Federal Savings and Loan. In 1962, Bridgeton Federal Savings and Loan merged with Elmer Savings and Loan Association, creating the second office. In 1965, on its 100th anniversary, Bridgeton Federal Savings and Loan acquired First Savings and Loan of Vineland, at 7 N. 6th Street, which became the third branch. To commemorate 100 years of service to the people of Cumberland and Salem Counties, the name of the bank was changed to Century Federal Savings and Loan Association. In its first century, the bank had grown to over $18 million in assets. In 1967, Century Federal relocated its Vineland office to 1005 E. Landis Avenue. The new facility was created from the shell of the former Vineland Lutheran Church of the Redeemer. Century Federal Savings and Loan merged with Gibbstown-based Paulsboro Building and Loan in 1972 and with Mullica Hill Building and Loan Association in 1981, adding two locations in Gloucester County. In 1989, Century Federal Savings and Loan purchased the assets of Cumberland Savings and Loan. By 1990, Century Federal Savings and Loan had $153 million in assets. In the interest of preserving its unique blend of modern banking features, traditional products and personalized service, the bank converted its charter in 1998 to a mutual savings institution, becoming Century Savings Bank. As a mutual bank, Century Savings Bank is owned by its depositors where all profits are reinvested into the bank to better serve the community. Through the years, Century Savings Bank has grown to serve residents in Salem, Cumberland and Gloucester counties. The organization remains committed to Community Banking Plus-a pledge to provide better products, superior customer service and commitment to the community.
